Fats are having their time in the spotlight these days (remember to store them in cool dark places). It’s so different than when I was growing up. We (somewhat) collectively believed that eating fat-containing foods would make us fat. Today, our slowly growing belief is that consuming fat helps us burn fat.
I don’t subscribe to attributing an action for fat to take in the body other than its role in absorption for key fat-soluble nutrients like Vitamin D. It’s important to scoliosis patients to be mindful of their Vitamin D levels. Vitamin D intake can be accomplished through supplements, midday sun and food. And the thing to remember about Vitamin D is that it is fat-soluble. Meaning, in order to be effectively absorbed, we must also consume fats!
I’ve developed a fondness for my fat sources and I’m sharing them with you today.
Here are my top 5 favorite fats that I enjoy
1. Avocado
Avocados are oh so yummy and versatile. With a creamy texture, it’s easy to throw in a smoothie, add to a hot dish and even add to a nice warm bowl of soup.
2. Avocado Oil
I prefer to use avocado oil when I cook on my stovetop. It allows me to prepare my meals worry-free as it has a high smoke point.
3. Castelvetrano Olives
I thought I didn’t like olives until I had castelvetrano olives. This mild olive is a great snack in a pinch. They have been my gateway olive too. Now I’m much more open to trying different ones, which is fun, but the castelvetrano remains my fav.
4. Hemp Seeds
Hemp seeds are a new love of mine. I’ve been adding a couple of tablespoons to my morning oatmeal. I realized my breakfast didn’t contain much fat lately, but I didn’t want to use what the Medical Medium refers to as “radical fats” before noon. And with that, my heart feels at ease with hemp. Not radical, a little fat, a lot of good absorption. Check check check.
5. Butter
Butter is absolutely delicious. And I’m talking real butter. Not margarine. Not ghee. BUTTER. Please know, I’m no Paula Deen about this oldie and a goodie. It is not a staple in my kitchen by any means. This is my “treat yo’ self” fat that I add to dishes on occasion.
